Eiffage Energía Sistemas, in a joint venture with the company Teléfonos, Líneas y Centrales (TELICE), will undertake the electrification of the Zaragoza-Teruel-Sagunto railway line for ADIF, covering 311 kilometres. This project is a component of the Comprehensive Modernization Master Plan, with investments in excess of 34 million euros.
These works are aimed at constructing the Cariñena and Villafranca traction substations, the 220 kV high voltage overhead line, and its auto-transformer stations.
The works encompass civil engineering, construction of structures, equipment installation, ductwork, access and security systems, as well as testing and commissioning.
Scope of the work
The purpose of the works under the contract with Eiffage Energía Sistemas is the construction of the installations required for the 25 kV electrification of the Zaragoza-Teruel route. Specifically, this includes the Cariñena 211.SE and Villafranca 212.SE traction substations, the 220 kV high voltage overhead line from the REE Calamocha substation to the Villafranca 212.SE traction substation, and the auto-transformer stations for the route.
Environmental benefits
Electrification offers environmental benefits over diesel traction, as well as enhancing the line’s reliability. This initiative will boost traffic flow and cut greenhouse gas emissions by 59%.
The line’s strategic location aims to facilitate rail connections between the Mediterranean and the Cantabrian and Atlantic seas, linking the port areas of Valencia and Bilbao with the logistics hubs of Platea (Teruel), Zaragoza-Plaza, and Júndiz (Vitoria).
Other projects for ADIF
Mention should also be made of other projects Eiffage Energía Sistemas has executed for ADIF, also in collaboration with TELICE.
The most recent being the upgrade of lighting in the Madrid-Seville high speed rail tunnels. These tunnels have a total length of 16 kilometres, and the purpose of the works was to install a new LED lighting system in these tunnels.
Additionally, in 2019, ADIF awarded us, in partnership with TELICE, a contract for the construction and maintenance of the auto-transformer and energy remote control centres for the Pedralba-Orense route. This section forms part of the Madrid-Galicia high speed line.
This project involved building several auto-transformer centres for the catenary power supply system. It was completed with such success that it led to a subsequent contract with ADIF, also in a joint venture with TELICE, for the project to modernise the railway line between Ourense and Lugo in order to connect Lugo to the high-speed rail network.
In this case, we were responsible for constructing an electrical substation in Oural; two final transformer stations; and eight intermediate auto-transformer stations at different points along the route between Ourense and Lugo.
