María Begoña Vila, Sara García Alonso, and Elena García Armada, along with the pioneering Spanish inventor and electrical engineer, Mónico Sánchez, lend their names to the meeting rooms in the new facilities of the Department of Studies and Projects of Eiffage Energía Sistemas in Albacete.
María Begoña Vila (Vigo, 1963) is a Doctor of Astrophysics. Specialising in the study of spiral galaxies, she is a systems engineer at NASA and part of the team responsible for launching the most powerful and sophisticated telescope ever sent into space.
Sara García Alonso (León, 1989) holds a PhD In Molecular Biology. As a researcher at the Spanish National Cancer Research Centre (CNIO), she leads a project aimed at discovering new drugs for lung and pancreatic cancer. She was selected by the European Space Agency as a reserve astronaut, becoming the first Spanish woman candidate for space travel.
Elena García Armada (Valladolid, 1971) holds a PhD in Industrial Engineering. She leads the group at the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC) that developed the ATLAS paediatric bionic exoskeleton, the first of its kind internationally. She is a full member of the Royal Academy of Engineering and an Honorary Corresponding Member of the Royal Academy of Medicine of Cantabria.
All three have expressed their gratitude for Eiffage Energía Sistemas’ decision, which also named the central headquarters’ board meeting room after Curie, honouring the pioneer in the field of radioactivity and the only person to receive two Nobel Prizes in different scientific fields: Physics and Chemistry.
Eiffage Energía Sistemas’ Commitment to Women in STEM
This decision is part of Eiffage Energía Sistemas’ commitment to women in this sector and to encouraging new generations, especially women, to pursue STEM careers.
Currently, out of the 4,932 employees at Eiffage Energía Sistemas, 868 are in various branches of engineering, of which 237 are women.
Alongside these notable women, Mónico Sánchez (Piedrabuena, Ciudad Real, May 4, 1880 – November 6, 1961) lends his name to the fourth meeting room in the Studies and Projects Department. He was a Spanish inventor and electrical engineer, a pioneer in radiology, wireless telecommunications, and electrotherapy, known for inventing a portable X-ray machine and high-frequency currents device in 1909.
Former headquarters of Eiffage Energía Sistemas
These rooms are part of the Eiffage Energía Sistemas’ Studies and Projects Department, located in the company’s former headquarters on Avenida de La Mancha in Albacete, which has just reopened.
The facilities cover an area of 255 square meters and accommodate 60 workstations, currently utilized at 90% capacity.
