Statkraft has begun dismantling work on the first two phases of the repowering of the Montes de Cierzo wind farm, located in the municipalities of Tudela and Cintruénigo, projects in which Eiffage Energía Sistemas is participating. This wind farm, which was commissioned in 2000, has an installed capacity of 60 megawatts (MW) and currently consists of 84 wind turbines. The first two phases of the repowering involve the removal of 44 wind turbines, which are to be replaced by 10 modern machines. Eiffage Energía Sistemas is collaborating in the design, procurement and construction of the civil and electrical works for this project, constructing the turbine foundations, access roads and assembly platforms, installing the medium and high voltage power lines for the distribution and transmission of energy, as well as the adaptation and refurbishment of two existing substations with the final energization.
Local employment
To this end, through our subsidiary EDS, with an office in Tudela, we estimate that, at the peak of activity, we will have some 90 professionals employed on the construction of this project.
In this way, Statkraft, which will allocate a total investment of around 100 million euros to this renewable project, maintains its commitment to having a positive impact on the region and the local economy. For this reason, it prioritises local hiring, purchasing and job creation.
Wind repowering: fewer wind turbines, but more efficient ones
Thanks to technological developments over the years, repowered wind farms have more efficient wind turbines with superior technology; they generate a greater amount of clean electricity, contributing to the reduction of polluting emissions; and they significantly reduce their visual impact on the landscape.
This renovation process also allows us to continue taking advantage of the best locations, in terms of wind resources and the existing development of electrical infrastructure.
In the case of the repowering of Montes de Cierzo, when it comes into operation after the first two phases, in the second half of 2026, the facility will be more efficient; it will produce more clean energy; and it will minimise the visual impact, by reducing the number of wind turbines by 77%.
The farm will go from having 30 MW of installed power, generating 66 GWh/year, to 64 MW, generating around 211 GWh/year
