Eiffage Energía Sistemas is developing an ergonomic support system for radiological examinations of the entire spine (ESSREES) financed by the Valencian Innovation Agency. This project is part of the Business Value Chain Consolidation program and is in its final phase of development.
The correct use of X-ray imaging techniques is essential for the follow-up and management of patients suffering from major spinal deformities. These are patients who usually suffer from significant mobility problems, which prevent them from standing upright.
Children with cerebral palsy
In addition, children with cerebral palsy are a representative population of this type of patient. These patients also have speech and cognitive limitations that increase the complexity of patient-physician interaction. Moreover, they usually present spasticity, a side effect of the paralysis that causes uncontrollable movements of the limbs.
A radiological study performed in an incorrect position, together with insufficient immobilisation of the patient, may lead to an incorrect diagnosis. This leads to significant harm in healthcare and unnecessary additional irradiation if the image has to be obtained again; as well as higher healthcare costs.
Aim of the project
In view of this problem, the aim of this project is the design, development, and validation of an ergonomic support system for radiological examinations of the entire spine (ESSREES), the use of which focuses on patients with the pathologies described above. It is a system that provides a high-quality X-ray image, making it easier for medical staff to perform the radiological test, guaranteeing patient safety throughout the test, and that achieves acceptance of use of the support among patients and family members accompanying them.
The design of the system was developed in previous phases of the project, with the creation of pre-manufacturing detail plans, focusing on improving functionality; optimisation of components; ensuring stability; definition of finishes; and compatibility with different radiological systems.
Final phase
In this final development phase, Eiffage Energía Sistemas continues to enjoy the support of the Valencia Biomechanics Institute as it performs a risk analysis and verification tests on the prototype.
The opinion of physiotherapists and carers from the Valencian Association for Cerebral Palsy Support (AVAPACE), with experience in caring for people with cerebral palsy and spinal deformities, has been taken into account.
An agreement has also been reached with the “La Fe de Valencia”
Health Research Institute to validate and clinically assess the product in a real-life setting with a representative group of patients.
