Eiffage Energía Sistemas is set to carry out a significant transformation of the lighting system at the High-Performance Sports Centre (CARD) in Madrid.
CARD’s sports facilities—including gyms, swimming pools, and combat rooms—currently have outdated lighting installations. Metal halide lamps, despite their high power, provide inefficient illumination and consume a disproportionate amount of energy. Moreover, the current systems lack dimming capabilities, limiting their functionality and contributing to higher energy consumption.
Energy savings
For these reasons, the management of the Higher Sports Council has deemed it urgent to revamp these installations. A new, state-of-the-art lighting system will be installed to improve conditions for the high-performance athletes at the CARD, while also achieving significant energy savings.
The contract for this project aims to reduce the energy consumption of the lighting installation by at least 30%, as well as to adapt it to various regulations and specific requirements regarding accessibility and digitalisation, modernising the facilities for their intended use.
Specifically, the project involves improving the lighting of the sports facilities located in Multi-use Buildings I and II, as well as in the main headquarters of Madrid’s CARD, which currently have the following lighting setups:
Multi-use Building I
- Swimming pool: equipped with 48 non-dimmable LED floodlights not resistant to chlorinated environments, each of 300 W, situated around the perimeter above the poolside areas.
- Men’s Gymnastics: there are currently 32 metal halide floodlights of 400 W each, mounted on the precast concrete beams of the ceiling.
- Women’s Gymnastics: similar to the Men’s Gymnastics area, it has 32 metal halide floodlights of 400 W each, mounted on the precast concrete beams of the ceiling.
- Combat Room: this room has 32 metal halide floodlights of 400 W each.
- Weightlifting Room 1: equipped with 20 floodlights of 100 W each.
- Weightlifting Room 2: 48 halogen lamps of 50 W each.
Multi-use Building II
- Sports Hall: currently used for badminton, it is equipped with 46 metal halide floodlights of 300 W each, arranged in a staggered pattern at the nodes of the joints in the structure of the roof space.
- Shooting Range: 6 LED lights of 30 W, 6 metal halide lamps of 300 W, 50 fluorescent fixtures of 4×36 W, and 110 fluorescent lights of 58 W.
- Fencing Room: contains 90 fluorescent fixtures of 2×58 W and 9 halogen lamps of 50 W.
Main Headquarters Building
- Sports Hall: equipped with 39 metal halide floodlights of 800 W each and 36 metal halide floodlights of 400 W each, mounted on the structural beams in the roof space.
- Boxing Hall: there are 26 metal halide floodlights of 800 W each and 20 metal halide floodlights of 400 W each, with similar locations as in the Sports Hall.
In the case of the swimming pool, despite the existing lighting system already utilising LED technology, the light fittings perform poorly because they are not designed for the chlorinated environment typical of an indoor heated pool. Additionally, they lack dimming capabilities, resulting in inefficient energy consumption. A new LED lighting system has been designed to address all these deficiencies.
Furthermore, to control the lighting of the different sports courts, multifunction sensors have been planned for strategic areas of each facility to enable intelligent lighting control, along with switches on a control panel for adjusting lighting in the different sports venues manually.
