Eiffage Energía Sistemas’ first BESS (Battery Energy Storage System) project in Spain for ACCIONA Energía.

Eiffage Energía Sistemas has started the installation of a new storage system (BESS) using batteries recycled from electric vehicles for ACCIONA Energía at its Extremadura I-II-III photovoltaic plant, located in Almendralejo (Badajoz).

Eiffage Energía Sistemas has carried out the complete civil works; the unloading of the battery containers and the power station; low voltage electrical connections between the battery containers and the power station; and the medium voltage (30kV) evacuation.

The installation will consist of two battery containers and a power station with a combined capacity of 2MW/5MWh, making it possible to store part of the energy generated by the solar plant and optimise its injection into the electricity grid.

Promoting and advancing the circular economy

The batteries used in the project include second-life units from Silence electric vehicles and new batteries from electric cars. This combination will allow the performance and behaviour of recycled batteries to be analysed in comparison to new batteries, contributing to the promotion and advancement of the circular economy.

In addition, by using recycled batteries from electric vehicles, the batteries become a valuable resource at the end of their service life in the transport sector, minimising the environmental impact of manufacturing new batteries and promoting more efficient and responsible resource management.

Use of renewable energies

Battery energy storage systems play a crucial role in harnessing renewable energies by storing surplus energy produced by intermittent sources, such as wind or solar, and then releasing it when there is demand. This strengthens grid stability and increases energy security in the event of extraordinary or unforeseen situations, such as peaks in demand caused by extreme weather events, blackouts or other emergencies.
